Arthroscopic meniscectomies were performed on 76 cases between June 1983 and September 1985. The average age of the patients at the time of surgery was 30 years (range, 7 to 62 years). Meniscectomies included 31 cases of medial meniscus, 28 lateral meniscus and 18 lateral discoid meniscus. The 30 degrees arthroscope alone was sufficient for most cases. The TV monitor was valuable, but of no absolute necessity. Most useful instruments were the banana-blade knife, curved basket forceps and pituitary rongeur. Seventy-six per cent of the patients showed excellent results at follow-up of more than 6 months. The major advantage of arthroscopic meniscectomy was easy postoperative rehabilitation and early return to activities of daily living for the patients.
