Six closely related members of one family were found to have hypoplastic patellae. Familial hypoplasia of the patella is a rare condition. The pattern of inheritance of this family studied here is consistent with the transmission of a predisposing factor as an autosomal daminant.The commonest cause is an abnormally high patella although there may be other anomalies such as failure of development of the lateral femoral condyle and of the trochlear groove, and often there is an associated external tibial torsion.
