The study of the cervical injury in elderly patient.

51 cases of cervical injury over 60 years old (average 69.3 years) were examined. 23 cases had bony damages and 45 cases had neurological complications. (11-complete, 17-incomplete, 17-central type)35 cases were treated conservatively, whereas operative reduction and fixation were performed in 16 cases. Severe complications such as pneumonia, stress ulcer, and senile dementia were seen in 21 cases (41%).5 cases died becouse of severe respiratory complication and stress ulcer. Bony stabilization were obtained in 44 cases (5 died, 2 missed at follow-up). 2 grade neurological improvement were obtained in 3 cases (Frankel's evaluation), we concluded that it is necessary to make the best efforts to get the patient out of the bed and take to the rehabilitation theater as early as possible to prevent the complications and get the good ADL function. At the same time it is very important to prevent this catastrophic injury.
