Treatment of malignant bone and soft tissue tumors of the chest wall.

Experience with 14 malignant bone and soft tissue tumors of the chest wall during the past 12 years was reviewed.There were 10 male and 4 female patients with their ages ranging from 30 to 71 years (average, 60). Of the 14 patients, 10 had tumors of the rib, 2 the clavicula, one the sternum, and one the intercostal muscle. Follow-up period ranged from a month to 5 years and 11 months. Three patients had the primary tumors, eleven had the metastatic and invasive tumors. Primary tumors included two chondrosarcoma and one neurogenic sarcoma.Two patients with chondrosarcoma who were disease free during 6 months to 2 years and 2 months after surgery, were treated with wide excision without recurrence or metastasis, but one with neurogenisarcoma died of local recurrence. Ten patients of eleven metastatic and invasive tumors were dead after surgery, but one is disease free during 6 years.On the basis of our analysis, we believe that all tumors of the chest wall should be considered malignant until proven otherwise and that wide excision should be carried out.
