Costochondral junction of the rat ribs treated with 0.6N-HCl were studied both at the light and fluorescence microscopic levels after implantation for periods of up to 20 days. The results obtained are as follows:1) The experimental periods were as long as up to 20 days, and complete new bone formation was observed in all implants.2) For the preparation of the anti-rat growth cartilage (GC) -mouse IgG, GC cells were isolated from the costochondral junction of the rat ribs and the crude extract of the rat GC cells were used as antigen.3) Collected implants were stained by the immunofluorescence technique in the cryostat section. A section from a 6-10 day implant showed fluorescent cells consisting of chondroblast and chondrocyte, in contrast, osteoblast and osteocyte had no fluorescence in any stage. These findings suggest that the hypertrophic cells may undergo death and disintegration.4) Bone- and cartilage-inducing factors (BMP and TGF-β) in the costochondral junction of the rat ribs, may be activated by treatment of 0.6N-HCl and enhance proliferation and differentiation of undifferentiated mesenchymal cells, leading to formation of cartilage and bone.
