Studies on the Mikulicz Line following High Tibial Osteotomy. Experimental Result of Weight-bearing Load Distribution in the Knee Joint.

Experimental results on five cadavers showed that following the correction of high tibial osteotomy the Mikulicz line should be set between the center and lateral one half of the knee joint. Oblique loads to the knee joint suggested to us the importance of overcorrection.Position of the Mikulicz line and joint inclination were evaluated using postoperative AP roentgerograns in forty-six patients with osteoarthritic knees who had undergone high tibial osteotomy. The relation between amount of correction and three preoperative background factors were assessed. Those factors were stage of ostearthritis, age, and activity. The Mikulicz' lines were set in almost the ideal position in regard to load distribution. The amount of correction correlated to activity and age, not but to the stage of osteoarthritic.
