Two Cases of Intraosseous Ganglion in the Foot.

We describe the clinical and radiological findings of two cases of intraosseus ganglion, as well as discussing their pathogenesis.The first case was a 23-year-old man complaining of pain in the left calcaneal portion for 2 weeks after minor trauma. Radiographs revealed a well defined cystic lesion in the left calcaneus. The cyst contained gelatinous fluid. This case supports Woods' theory.The second case was a 62-year-old man who had walking pain in the left big toe for several years. X-rays showed a cystic lesion in the first proximal phalanx, with osteoarthritis of the MTP joint. No communication between the cyst and the adjacent joint was observed.Intraosseous ganglion are very similar to subchondral cysts of osteoarthritis. In this case it is difficult to establish whether a juxta-articular cyst is secondary to articular degeneration or whether the articular lesions are the consequence of the cyst. This case supports not only Woods' theory but also Crane's.Both cases were treated with curettage and bonegrafting, with good results achieved. We diagnosed them as intraosseous ganglion by radiological, operative, and histological findings.
