Clinical Analysis of Cervical Spine and Spinal Cord Injury in Senility.

Ten patients older than 65 years were admitted to our hospital for treatment of acute cervical spine and spinal cord injuries. Eight cases were hyperextension injuries, and 7 cases were central cervical spinal cord injuries. Prognoses of those with central cervical spinal cord injuries were relatively good. Roentgenographic findings and MR imaging revealed the subclinical existence of critical factors characteristic to senile cervical spines. The location of the osteophytes, herniated disks, narrow intervertebral spaces, hypertrophic yellow ligaments tended to coincide with the level of spinal cord injury. Cervical laminoplasty was performed in one case with a calcified yellow ligament, and spinal fusion was performed in 2 cases with spinal instability. Coexsistence of low and high signal areas in the spinal cord in acute phase MR imaging appeared to indicate a bad prognosis.
