The effect of superabsorbent polymer (SAP) on the growth of sorghum was investigated on Alfisol in the semi-arid tropics of India. (1) Within the SAP concentration of 0.05 to 0.30% of the soil, the water absorbing capacity of SAP increased with increases in its concentration. At the concentration of 0.30%, SAP absorbed 60 times as much as its weight. (2) In the pot experiment, the effect of SAP was examined up to the concentration of 0.20%, and the growth of shoot or root was significantly enhanced at 0.20% compared to those at the concentration lower than 0.20%. (3) Under field conditions 0.3% SAP concentration enhanced the growth of sorghum throughout growing period. Total biomass production at harvesting time was increased by 30% due to SAP application. (4) The water holding capacity of SAP was retained until the harvesting of sorghum.
