The purpose of this essay is to clarify what marriage was in Tokugawa Japan, and to introduce its basic characteristics. The central method used to approach this question is historical demography employing the database of shumon ninbetsu aratame cho from the Tokugawa period. This essay has revealed the three conspicuous features of the Japanese marriage; regional diversity in various aspects, the fluid nature resulted from frequent divorce and remarriage, and marriage as a process that consisted of a series of events. The second and third characteristics are connected to each other, because divorce occurred almost always in the transitional period. The fundamental feature of the transitional period would be the potential double membership of the bride or the young couple.
