Bending Fatigue of Fiber

This article deals with the measurement of the bending fatigue lives of four kinds of filaments ----nylon, terylen, high tenacity rayon and the ordinary viscose rayon. In the first part of the experiment to which the present article refers, a law on the fluctuations of fatigue life of a fiber was found. This law was helpful to the next stage of the experiment. In the second stage, two kinds of repeated stress were used successively to rupture a fiber. This is called breaking by multiple repeated stress on two levels. The following symbols are used : first stress ........................S1, fatigue life under S1 ........................N1 second stress........................S2, fatigue life under S2........................N2 Assume that the repetition of S1 is n1 and that of S2 until the breaking of a fiber is n2. Then n1/N+n2/N=a. a was calculated from the results of the experiment and was found to be larger or smaller than unity, but rarely equal to unity, depending on the kind of fiber and the difference between S1 and S2. Therefore, the hypothesis advanced by Miner for metal does not hold for fibers.
