The authors have inquired experimentally into the mechanical properties, such as tensile, creep, and recovery behaviors, of Kanekalon, vinyl chloride-acrilonitrile copooymer fibers, at various temperatures and humidities. As a result, the tensile properties of Kanekalon can be expressed quantitatively, like the tensile properties of other kinds of fibers, by seven tensile characteristic values: the 1st modulus of elasticity, yield point, yield elongation, yield part elongation, 2nd modulus of elasticity, tensile strength and total elongation. The total elongation of Kanekalon due to constant tensile load consists of three types of elongation: (1) Instantaneous elongation, directly proportional to tensile stress and inversely proportional to the modulus of elasticity, (2) relaxative elongation, which has nearly the same behavior as that of Voigt's model and corresponds to the yield-part elongation in load-elongation diagram and (3) creep elongation, directly proportional to the logarithm of the duration of loading. Similarly, the total recovery shrinkage due to unloading consists of three types of shrinkage: instaneous, relaxative and creep recovery. Accordingly, the general creep and recovery formulas previously reported are on the whole applicable to Kanekalon. The effect of temperature upon these mechanical properties of Kanekalon is as remarkable as on other fibers, but the effect of humidity is very slight.
