A study was made on the prevalence of pulmonary tuberculosis among employees of smaller enterprises in relation to the size of enterprise and the status of response to the mass chest X-ray survey. The total number of enterprises examined during the period from 1963 to 1965was 2, 194, and they were divided into the following three groups according to their status of response to the mass chest X-ray survey. Group I was examined once a year and altogether three times during this period, group II received mass survey twice during this period, and group III examined first time in 1965. Enterprises in groups I, II and III occupied 59%, 17%and 24%, respectively. The majority of the enterprises, i. e.82.5%, was occupied by the smaller enterprises with less than 50 employees. (Table 1)
Status of response to the mass survey was shown in Fig.1, and all of the enterprises with employees more than 300 belongs to group I, but the number of enterprises belongs to groups II and III showed increase smaller enterprises.
For cases with suspicious findings on r a diophotography, radiography was indicated. The total number of persons indicated radiography was 2, 938, and among them, 77% were actually radiographed. Active cases were 604 (0.72%), and among them, cavitary cases were 43 and cavity suspicious cases were 74. The number of inactive cases was 565 (0.69%), pleurisy cases were 8, and nontuberculous chest diseases were 27. (Table 3)
Prevalence ratio of active cases showed increase with the raise of age (Table 2), and it was also higher in the smaller enterprises. (Table 4) The ratio of group I was lower than that of the other two groups. Prevalence ratio of cavitary cases was 0.05%, and the ratio was higher in the smaller enterprises and in group I than the larger enterprises and groups II and III, respectively. (Table 5),
Prevalence of newly detected active cases was 0.14%, and the ratio was higher in the smaller enterprises and in group III than in the larger enterprises and groups II and I. (Table 6) Prevalence of inactive cases showed decrease with the increase of number of employees. (Fig.2)
The above mentioned facts indicate the necessity of intensifying the mass chest X-ray survey expecially for smaller enterprises under the governmental health insurance scheme.
