In the paper, some effects of solid suspension on separation of oil in water are experimentally investigated. Furthermore, a method of coalescing and separating small oil particles by solid particle bed is examined on its performance of removing oils from water phase, including Bunker oil and Gas oil.<BR>The solid substances attached to oil particles are considered to reduce separation velocity of oil particles in water to about one order less than that in case of pure oil when the amount of solid substances is 10-20% of the oil contents. Such a situation, which would be possible for actual oily water on board, should be a very severe inlet condition for separators.<BR>It also results that the separator composed of SiC powder bed of #60-#100 as a coalescing filter can remove even a part of smaller oil particle than 10 microns, and that an occasional stirring motion of the powder bed by blades installed in the separator is fairly effective to break choking of the bed. It is more difficult to separate Gas oil than to separate Bunker oil, since Gas oil is more easily dispersed for the same mixing condition with water.
