Polyester tire cords and filaments were steam heat-treated under tension or tensionless states at temperatures ranging from 70°C to 200°C for 1 hour. Several properties were measured. The following results wereobtained.<BR>(1) The tensile strength decreased markedly by treatments at above Ca. 150°C. In dry-heat treatment, tensile strength decreased at above Ca. 190°C.<BR>(2) Intrinsic viscosity decreased markedly by treatments above Ca. 150°C. This tendency was in goodagreement with the decrease of tensile strength. In dry heat-treatment, intrinsic viscosity indicated no changeby treatment at 220°C.<BR>(3) The degree of crystallinity increased markedly by treatments at above Ca. 100°C. The increase ofcrystallinities was greater than that by dry-heat treatment.<BR>(4) The size of crystallites increased with an increasing temperature, then increased markedly by treatments at above Ca. 161°C. The increase of the size was greater than that by dry-heat treatment.<BR>(5) (a) Long period obtained by X-ray small angle diffraction indicated no changes by treatment atfrom 170°C to 200°C.<BR>(b) Electron density differences increased with an increasing temperature. This tendency was greater than that under dry-heat treatments.<BR>It was concluded from these results that the degradation of degree of polymerization and the distinct changes in the fine structure of polyester caused a decrease in tensile strength of polyester tire cord.<BR>The effects of steam-heat treatment on fine structure and tensile strength of polyester were stronger than those of dry-heat treatment.
