Basic magnesium carbonate is used as filler for transparent rubber goods and reinforcing agent. In order to make clear the factors which influence the reinforcing property and transparency during the processing and to rationalise the production method, the authors make, beside rubber compounding tests on several samples, electro-micro-scopic determination of the diameter, and shape of the particles and determination of apparent specific volume.
Between the reinforcing property and the apparent specific volume there has been found a correlation that the latter is decided mainly by the secondary aggregation of plate crystallites. Next, the authors consider the formation process of basic magnesium carbonate after the soda method to consist of two stages : formation of a neutral salt and formation of a basic salt from a neutral salt, then make close studies on the influence given by several conditions on the separation velocity and the size of crystals, and show that the formation process of basic magnesium carbonate after the gas method can be dealt with in the same way.
The authors observe, making use of the results obtained, the relation between the formation conditions of crystals and the apparent spocific volume of the finished articles, as well as the influence of the conditions of filtering, drying and crushing on the apparent specific volume, and not only notice the existence of Mr. Atodas secondary basketwork type structure, but also make clear the relation between the formation conditions of crystals and the formation of this structure.
Futher, the authors examine, keeping in view the formation process of basic magncsium carbonate, the method of avoiding the large possibility of allowing neutral salts to be mixed and thus making the finished goods less transparent, and reach the expected results.
Moreover, the authors have found a method of comparing numerically the transparency of finished goods exactly in a simple way and of determining the refractive index of powder substance, making use of the difference in the degree of dispersion of light in the dispersionmedium and dispersoid, and deduce that a little difference in the refractive index shown by several types of basic magnesium carbonate influences the colour of the rubber compound containing basic magnesium carbonate.
The authors conclude that the usual attempts to find a direct relation between the apparent specific volume or transparency of basic magnesium carbonate and its chemical composition is not adequate, and that studies must be made on crystal structure and composition.
