Male Wistar rats were cecectomized or sham-operated. Wheat bran was added to the fiberfree diet (FF diet) at a 10% (w/w) level, which was called the WB diet. The animals were fed on these diets for 5 weeks. Growth and water consumption were not influenced by cecectomy or the WB diet. The apparent digestibility of dietary proteins was decreased after cecectomy and WB diet feeding. Gastrointestinal transit time (TT) was decreased and fecal output (fecal weight and number of fecal pellets) was increased after cecectomy and WB diet feeding. Under FF diet feeding, TT in cecectomized rats was decreased by about two-third compared with sham-operated rats. Under the WB diet, the content of acid-detergent fibers in feces of sham-operated and cecectomized rats were the same. However, the content of neutral-detergent fibers in feces was significantly greater in cecectomized rats compared with sham-operated rats. In sham-operated rats, the pH of cecal contents was significantly lower in rats fed the WB diet than in rats fed the FF diet, and an enlargement of the cecum was not observed in WB diet fed rats, as judged by weight. An enlargement of the colon in cecectomized and WB diet fed rats was not observed, as judged by its weight, length, mucosal protein and DNA content. The pH of the colonic contents was significantly lower in rats fed the WB diet than in rats fed the FF diet, but was not influenced by cecectomy. Wheat bran of feces and the mucosal surface of the colon were studied with a scanning electron microscope. The pericarps of wheat bran from sham-operated rats had extensive bacterial invasions compared with cecectomized rats. Morphological changes were not observed on the mucosal surface of the colon.
