Following the previous report (Part I), chemical structure of schizophyllan, a glucan isolated from culture filtrates of Schizophyllum commune (Suehirotake), was studied. Schizophyllan was attacked by endo-β-1, 3-glucanase of Bac. circulans and a large amount of 3-O-β-gentiobiosylglucose accompanied with glucose, a little amount of laminaribiose and gentiobiose was liberated. The rate of hydrolysis was 43_??_45%. On the other hand, hydrolysis by exo-β-1, 3-glucanase of Basidiomycetes sp. QM-806 liberated two molar proportion of glucose and one molar proportion of gentiobiose from schizophyllan. The rate of hydrolysis reached to 71%. These results show that schizophyllan is a glucan having repeating unit composed of three β-1, 3-linked D-glucopyranose residues, to one of which is attached a single D-glucopyranose residue through β-1, 6-linkage.
