An extracellular neutral polysaccharide designated as schizophyllan was produced by submerged culture of a Fungi Schizophyllum commune Fries (Suehirotake) and was precipitated from clear filtrate of 4_??_8 day-old cultures by the addition of water-miscible organic solvents such as methanol to the concentration of 35_??_40%, yielding 3_??_8g per liter culture fluid. The white, fibrous polysaccharide obtained was easily soluble in cold or hot water, forming extremely viscous solution (intrinsic viscosity 12_??_13). From the results of complete or partial acid hydrolysis and acetolysis it has been shown to be a simple glucan consisting of β-1, 3- and β-1, 6-glucosidic linkages.
