Analyses of by-products and impurities on the course of camphor synthesis from turpentine oil were perfomed by means of Raman spectra, fractional distillation and chemical analyses. Isoinerization by-products from pinene were dipentene, terpinolene, α-terpinene and p-cymene. Lower boiling fraction of acetylated oil contained p-cymene mainly. Impurities of isobornyl ace-tate were p-cymene and γ-terpinene, and the lower boiling fraction of the mother liquor separa-ted from isoborneol consisted of same components. It was considered that dipentene and terpinolene, contained as impurities of camphene fraction, were isomerized to α-, γ-terpinene, and converted to p-cymene on the acetylation process.
