In order to find the correlation between the degree of pithiness and the growth of radish root, the coefficient of partial correlation has been computed. These coefficients serve to determine the correlation between the dependent factor and each of the several independent factors.In the second-order partial correlation coefficients, the data obtained from the cultural treatments did not always show significant differences. Among them, certain correlations were found between the degree of pithiness and the amount of soluble solids or the root weight. However, no correlations were found between the degree of pithiness and the length of bolting shoot or leaf weight of radish.The author did not calculate the coefficient of correlation between the degree of pithiness and the ratio of T/R, but the coefficient of the second-order partial correlation between the degree of pithiness and the leaf weight is equal to the coefficient of correlation between the degree of pithiness and the ratio of T/R. In most cases, there are little correlations between them. Although T/R ratio declines as the growth of radish proceeds, the progress of pithiness does not run paralel with T/R ratio. If the materials are sampled at the same time, it may not be found the correlation between the degree of pithiness and the ratio of T/R.The degree of pithiness is highly correlated with the specific gravity of fresh roots. The result clearly shows that the specific gravity is high in nonpithy roots. The first-order partial correlation coefficient is aproximately equal to 1.0. These results indicate that there is a close relationship between pithiness or firmness of the root and the specific gravity of fresh root.
