The aim of this study is to test the effect of endogenous prostaglandins (PGs) on gastric acid secretion. Using hypertonic solution which possibly secretion. Using hypertonic solution which possibly stimulates blosynthesis of PGs, the PGE2 release and acid output were measured in rats with gastric fistulation.Twenty percent mannitol solution (1220mosmol) significantly stimulated the PGE2 release and inhibited acid secretion.After replacement of hypertonic solution with normotonic solution, the PGE2 release and acid output returned to the basal values. Indomethacin increased nonstimulated acid secretion and inhibited reduction of acid secretion induced by hypertonic solution.These results suggest that endogenous PGE2 may have an inhibitory effect on gastric acid secretion.
