Acute drug-induced allergic hepatitis with bridging necrosis : A follow-up study.:A FOLLOW-UP STUDY

We studied bridging necrosis (BN) of liver biopsy specimens obtained within 14 days after the onset of symptoms from patients with acute drug-induced allergic hepatitis (ADIAH), and acute viral hepatitis type A and type B. BN was observed in 13 among 53 cases of the former group and in 6 among 68 cases of the latter group. We have found that the ADIAH group is frequently associated with BN (p<0.02).Furthermore, we surveyed the patients having ADIAH with BN. A significant female prepon-derance was shown in patients having ADIAH with BN compared with those without BN (p<0.05). Central-central BN was most common among three forms of BN and considered to be a more characteristic form in ADIAH with BN. Serial histologic studies revealed that the long-term prognosis in patients having ADIAH with BN is excellent, provided the causative drug is withdrawn promptly.
