The surface chemical properties of various N-lauroyl-N-methyltaurinates (RCON(CH3) C2H4SO3Na, RCON(CH3)C2H4SO3Mg1/2, RCON(CH3)C2H4SO3Ca1/2; R=CH3(CH2)10: LMT) have been examined in terms of surface tension, electric conductivity, pNa, dynamic and static light scattering and spectral shifts of vibrational Raman lines. These parameters are found to change with surfactant concentration, depending on the particular counter ion. The micellar aggregation number in LMT-Na is much smaller than those in the other two surfactants. The Raman signal on the basis of the S-O stretching is shifted to high wavenumbers because of the formation LMT-Na micelles. LMT-Na micelles would thus appear to serve as favorable sites for Na+ ion capture, owing to its bulky structure formed around the hydrophilic group, compared to the Mg and Ca analogues.
