To clarify the function of lipid metabolism in rats poisoned by PCB experiments in vivo and in vitro were carried out. Two groups of 20 male Wistar rats were used as the experimental and control groups. The control group was fed a commercial flour diet and the experimental group was fed a diet supplemented by 500ppm PCB (KC-500). After 35 days under experimental conditions, cholesterol and phospholipid levels in the liver and blood serum, and high density lipoprotein cholesterol levels in blood serum increased significantly in the group fed PCB.When, 14C-acetate or 14C-glucose was administered to both groups, incorporation of 14C into the liver cholesterol fraction significantly increased in the experimental group. However, no significant change was observed for CO2 respiratory content of either the control or the poisoned group when measured 90 minutes after the administration of either 14C-acetate or 14C-glucose. In vitro addition of 14C-acetate or 14C-glucose to liver slices taken from the experimental group, caused an increase in the incoporation of 14C into the cholesterol fraction. These observations suggest that cholesterol synthesis increases in rats which have injected PCB in large dosages.
