Luteinizing hormone (LH) and vasopressin were injected into the ovarian bursa of the immature female rat pretreated with gonadotropins, and their effects on the ascorbic acid concentration in the ovary were studied. For comparison, the same substances were administered intravenously. Intrabursal LH induced less depletion of ascorbic acid. from the ovary than intravenous LH. The longer the treatment with intrabursal LH, the greater the depletion. On the other hand, intrabursal vasopressin induced more depletion of ascorbic acid than intravenous vasopressin. It is possible that the germinal epithelium of the ovary is only slightly permeable to LH but highly permeable to vasopressin. Inasmuch as vasopressin acts directly on the ovary to induce ascorbic acid depletion, the present intrabursal assay method is neither highly sensitive nor specific to LH.
