Quantitative determinations using a modern spectrophotometer are made either by an automatic recording or by a direct reading of the spectrum meter. In this investigation, a method of direct reading of the spectrum from a spark by the use of the Beckman Model DU apparatus for light absorbancy has been used. Since the energy of the spectrum is determined by an instantaneous value in this case, the conditions for regulating the light source have a great effect on the results of estimation. Therefore, attempts were first made to find the proper conditions. Experimental results indicated that the following procedural provisions gave a stable and strong spectrum to be estimated:<BR>(1). The end of the sample is made as small as possible, so that the spark is produced from all parts of the sample surface.<BR>(2) The sample is made the lower electrode, and a carbon rod the upper electrode.<BR>(3) The electrodes are brought close to each other, to a certain distance.<BR>(4). The determination is made within a certain time after pre-sparking for a definite period.<BR>Determinations of Cu, Mg, Mn, and Si in Al alloys have been carried out under the above conditions, and satisfactory results obtained.
