A systematic analysis of silicates has been investigated in which the elements to be estimated-Na, K, Mg, Ca, Mn, Al, P, and total Fe-are separated out by the use of ion-exchange resins, without any other separatory operation. About 100 mg sample in conc HCl is passed through an anion exchanger. The resin is eluted with 10.5 <I>N</I> HCl to obtain an effluent containing Na, K, Mg, Ca, and Al; and this is followed by eluting with 6 <I>N</I> HCl to obtain an effluent containing Mn, Ti, and P, and finally with 0.5 <I>N</I>HCl for the liberation of the Fe. The first effluent is passed through a cation exchanger, Na and K are liberated with dil HCl, and Ca and Mg are separated from Al by the use of NH4 acetate solution. Mn and Ti are separated from P by the use of a cation exchanger and the separation of Mn from Ti is made with H2SO4. The estimations are carried out by titration or the colorimetric method, except for Al. Practical application of the above method on analyses of several silicate rocks gave fairly satisfactory results.
