A rapid method of determination of lime necessary in the culculation of the lime ratio in the manufacturing of iron and steel has been sought through the use of the following procedures.1). The sample (0.3 g) is decomposed with 15<I>ml</I> perchloric acid, the silicic acid is dehydrated into an insoluble form by evaporating to dryness, the residue is made up to 250<I>ml</I> with water, a. 25-<I>ml</I> portion of which is neutralized with NaOH solution, iron and aluminum, etc., are masked by adding 34<I>ml</I> triethanolamine, 3<I>ml</I>1<I>N</I> NaOH is added, and the solution is titrated with 0.1<I>N</I> sodium ethylenediaminetetraacetate standard solution, using Dotite MX as an indicator.2).The sample (0.030.04 g) is decomposed with 5<I>ml</I> perchloric acid and 4<I>ml</I> hydrogen fluoride, the hydrogen fluoride is evaporated off, the residue is neutralized with NaOH solution, triethanolamine is added, and the titration is carried out as under.1).3).<BR>In case the sample contains more than several percent of manganese oxide, 0.030.05 sample is decomposed with 15<I>ml</I> nitric acid, manganese dioxide is separated by filtration of the precipitate formed by addition of solid KClO<SUB>3</SUB>, the filtrate is neutralized with NaOH solution, triethanolamine is added, and the titration is carried out as under 1). The errors by these methods were ±0.5 CaO and the time required was about 10 min.
