The colorimetric determination of cyanate ion by diacetyl monoxime was studied.<BR>Cyanate ion reacts with hydroxylamine at 60 °C and converts into hydroxyurea. Resulting hydroxyurea reacts with diacetyl monoxime in the presence of acidic catalyst at 100°C and produces red color. The calibration curve follows the Beers law in the range of 020 ppm CNO<SUP>-</SUP> in samples. The recommended analytical procedure is as follows.<BR>To 0.5 m<I>l</I> of hydroxylamine solution a mixture of 2.0 m<I>l</I> of a neutral sample solution and 1.5 m<I>l</I> of 0.2 <I>M</I> phosphate buffer solution (pH 7.0) is added. After heating the mixture for 30 minutes in a water bath at 60°C, 1.0 m<I>l</I> of diacetyl monoxime solution and 2.0 m<I>l</I> of acidic catalyst solution are added. The mixture is heated for 15 minutes in a boiling water bath. After cooling in tap water, the absorbance is measured at 520 nm against a reagent blank prepared in the same way. The acidic catalyst solution contains, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid, thiosemicarbazide and iron alum.<BR>The effects of diverse ions on the absorbance of a colored product were examined. This procedure is also applicable to the analysis of various types of industrial waste water.
