A number of peptide coupling reagents have been developed so far. Although some reviews on the reagents have already been appeared, this review article describes on the mechanisms of peptide coupling reactions which involve the recemization, the intermediate model of the condensation reaction utilizing DCC, intramolecular neighboring group participation in aminolysis and the related hydrolysis reactions, properties of the recently developed acylated HOBt, and multi-functional catalysts, based on the viewpoint of the rapidly growing bioorganic chemistry.
