Clinical and histological studies were made on 174 alcoholics who were taken liver biopsy within about 2 weeks after admission.About two-third of patients had hepatomegaly and about 40% of those alcoholics revealed jaundice.Liver biopsy showed cirrhosis in about 20% of those alcoholics and alcoholic hepatitis in about 10% of them.Alcoholic hyaline was observed in 4 out of 21 cases with alcoholic hepatitis and in 10 out of 37 cases with liver cirrhosis. There were no significant differences in the age and quantity of alcoholic intake distribution in histologically devided 5 groups. So, duration and quantity of alcohol consumption does not seem to be essential for the cause of alcoholic liver injuries in our cases.Average MDA value was considerably higher in alcoholic liver injuries, suggesting some role of lipoperoxide in development of alcoholic liver injuries.
