The study was aimed at elucidating the effect of plasma expander on the functional behavior of right atria as booster pump, reservior and conduit, under sympathetic denervation due to high spinal anesthesia. Utilizing anesthetized and open-chest dogs, the changes of right atrial diameter (microsonometer), and pressure (Millar's micromanometer) and enlarged P and "a" waves (direct coupling EKG and sample hold circuit) were obtained. In hypotension due to high spinal anesthesia, the effect of plasma expander on right atrial systolic shortening (R. A. S. S.), shortening rate (R. A. S. R.), atrial filling time ratio during ventricular contraction phase (T. R. A. F.), the max. dp/dt of "a" wave and effective compliance of the total vascular beds (EC) were investigated.Following results were obtained : R. A. S. R., max. dp/dt (a), T. R. A. F. and E. C. were all decreased by high spinal anesthesia and these changes were all restored by administration of plasma expander.
