The phagocytic capability of iris fibroblasts was investigated electronmicroscopically. Gold-sol particles, which were injected into the anterior chamber as lysosomal markers, were selectively taken up by fibroblasts and macrophages in the iris stroma. The cytoplasm of the gold-sol-phagocytized fibroblasts displayed a strong histochemical reaction to acid phosphatase. A reaction product representing acid phosphatase activity was not only observed in the cisternae and vesicles of the well-developed Golgi complex but also in the inclusions containing the gold-sol particles. This indicates that the iris fibroblasts have phagocytic capabilities under appropriate conditions.
