Intrahepatic biliary hypoplasia(non-syndromatic), with special reference to the three dimensional structure of the intrahepatic biliary system.

The three dimensional structure of the intrahepatic biliary system in the liver clinically diagnosed as intrahepatic biliary atresia was studied by reconstruction from histologic serial sections and the following results are obtained. (1) A conspicuous degree of hypoplasia of the bile ducts and consequent disorganization of the intrahepatic biliary system are the essential pathologic features. (2) It can be surmised that the presence of bile ductule-like structures results from a failure of linkage between the bile canaliculi and the ends of central bile ducts in the developing liver. (3) This case corresponds to the non-syndromatic paucity of interlobular bile ducts. The difference of pathologic features of the liver between this case and Alagille syndrome may be based on the difference of the gestational age at which time certain etiologic agents are involved.
