Three cases of adenomatous hyperplasia of the liver (AH) needed to be distinguished from hepatocellular carcinoma.

We reported the pathological findings of AH detected in three operated cases. The results were as follows:<BR>Macroscopically, AH is nodular lesion with no capsule and little variation in color. Liver cirrhosis was basic lesion in these cases.<BR>Portal tracts were identified in the peripheral area as well as in the center of the nodules. The nodule consisted of cells devoid atypia, but had occasional foci of hypercellularity. Characteristic cell arrangement such as trabecular pattern and pseudoglandular pattern usually seen is hepatocellular carcinoma was not recognized.<BR>The nodules were demarcated by fibrous stroma of liver cirrhosis, but had areas indicating expanding growth.
