The clinicopathological study of p53 overexpression in hepatocellular carcinoma.

Thirty four cases of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded biopsy specimens obtained from hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were examined immunohistochemically using anti-p53 and anti-PCNA monoclonal antibodies.<BR>Nuclear localization of p53 protein were found in 9/34 (26.5%) cases of HCC. The positive rate of p53 overexpression in HCCs with stage IV-A and stage IV-B was significantly higher than that in HCCs with stage I, II and III, and the rate of poorly differentiated HCCs was higher than that of well and moderately differentiated HCCs. Further, the PCNA labeling indexes of p53 protein positive HCC group were significantly higher than those of negative HCC group.<BR>These results suggest that p53 overexpression in HCC is closely associated with the dedifferentiation and the proliferative activity of the tumor.
