A successful case of interferon therapy for chronic hepatitis C associated with features of autoimmune hepatitis.

A 53-year-old woman was admitted because of elevation of aminotransferases and positive of HCVAb. Laboratory tests revealed elevations of levels of aminotransferase and and IgG, and positives of ANF and LE test. The histological examination of the liver showed the findings of chronic active hepatitis, which were compatible with autoimmune hepatitis. However, HCVAb and HCV RNA (genotype III) were positive, whereas HBsAg and IgM-HAAb negative. She was, therefore, diagnosed as chronic active hepatitis C with features of autoimmune hepatitis, and treated with recombinant interferon α2a 6MU daily for two weeks and thereafter 3 times weekly for 3 months. After interferon therapy, the aminotransferases improved to normal level and remained unchanged for about one year. Furthermore, the autoantibodies, HCV-C100-3Ab and HCV RNA became negative with the improvement of aminotranferase. This case indicates that HCV infection might induce the autoimmune reactions, which could be disappeared by an anti-viral agent.
