Making use of mathematical model we have attempted to classify the various agents modifying the rat paw edema. In the preceding paper (2) we described a model, which showed fairly good fitness to some selected cases of experimental edema in rats.<BR> The model is constructed on an assumption that the swelling volume is the reflection of the dynamic balance between the swelling force evoked by the inciter and the antiswelling force intrinsic to the animal. The model describes the swelling volume Y as a function of time t following inciter:<BR> Y=C/A-B(e-Bt-e-At)<BR>Three parameters A, B and C are concerned with the decay constant of swelling force, the degree of the antiswelling force and initial velocity of swelling force respectively. In a broad sense, the decay constant could be correlated with a kind of antiswelling force of the animal.<BR> A matter of concern to the authors has been finding which of the model parameters is most likely to be influenced by the so-called anti-inflammatory agents. General depression of the magnitude of swelling is brought by either an increase in A or B, or a decrease in C. The modification in the swelling curve due to pretreatment with an agent is, however, more likely the results of concomitant change in these parameters as already reported (1).<BR> In the present investigation various types of inciter-antagonist combination have been examined particularly from the standpoint of change in model parameters.
