Effect of Spin-Dependence of Fission Width of <SUP>239</SUP>Pu on Self-Shielding and Doppler Effects

The effects of the spin-dependence of the fission width have been calculated for the self-shielding and Doppler effects. The spin-dependent fission widths derived from the channel theory are used in the calculation. Unusually strong spin-dependence is seen with <SUP>239</SUP>Pu. This spin-dependence of fission widths should significantly reduce the self-shielding and Doppler effects of the fission cross section, though the effect would be negligible for the other cross sections. The spin-dependent fission widths increase by more than 20 % the negative Doppler coefficient of the ZPR-3 Assembly 48. The reactivity Doppler coefficient of 1 g of <SUP>239</SUP>Pu inserted in this system has also been calculated. The spin-dependent fission widths reduce the positive Doppler coefficient to one-tenth and contributes to reducing the discrepancies between the reported calculations and experiment.
