It is well known that the utterances of autistic children are irrelevant and metaphorical. Among several features of their utterances unsuitable performance at the end of sentences is characteristic. In this study, we focus on the end particle "te" as one example of such performance.The subject is a 7 year old boy who can speak two-word utterances even though these utterances are mainly irrelevant. The data consists of a 6 hour tape recorded sample which was gathered during in and out door play with the researcher.Only three utterance of "-te" could be identified from the sample; only one of these is used appropriately. However, it was also found the subject presented his demands frequently with inappropriate speech or/and behavior. Compared with normal devolopment in which normal infants begin to use "-te" at the age of 1; 6, and use it frequently in asking for things in the third year, the subject shows a gross delay and disturbance in the acquisition of this particle.In the function of syntax in Japanese, the end of the sentence represents the approach style of the speaker to the listener. We speculate, therefore, that if a child has a disturbance in performance at the end of sentences, it means he has a disturbance not only in the syntax but also in the personal relationship. In light of this point, we emphasize the necessity to investigate the function of the end of the sentence in autistic children as an index of relationship between language disorders and emotional disorders.
