Colon 26 cells were injected ineo the spleen of 95 mice. Then, the incidence of liver metastasis and the number and the size of metastatic nodules were compared among four experimental groups : control (n=24), mice receiving systemic chemotherapy using UFT and cisplatin (n=23), mice undergoing splenectomy 9 days after the injection of tumor cells (n=25), and mice having both splenectomy and systemic chemotherapy (n=23). Liver metastasis developed in 55 of 95 mice (57.9%).There was no significant difference in the incidence of liver metastasis among the four experimental groups. The number of metastatic nodules, however, dicreased significantly in mice having chemotherapy or chemotherapy+splenectomy than in controls. The size of metastatic nodules was also significantly decreased in mice having chemotherapy or chemotherapy +splenectomy. In mice having splenectomy alone, the number of metastatic nodules was decreased but the size of nodules increased, compared to controls.
