A Case Report of Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Anal Canal, Treated by Chemotherapy and Radiation Therapy.

A 66-year-old Japanese woman was admitted on September 30, 1990 with a two month history of rectal bleeding. Physical examination revealed a 5×3×3cm ulcerated tumor in the anterior wall of the anal canal, just above the dentate line. Histological examination of biopsy specimens confirmed the diagnosis of well differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. A combined chemotherapy and radiation therapy was done, that included 5-fluorouracil iv 500 mg/ 24hr (DAY1-13), mitomycin C bolus iv 10 mg (DAY2), cisplatinum iv 50 mg/24hr (DAY3) and external beam irradiation with <SUP>60</SUP>Co in the schedule of 1.8 Gy/fr, 5fr/wk (DAY2-33, total dose 41.4 Gy/23fr). On November 28, 1990 (DAY 46), local resection of the residual tumor was performed. Histological examination of the resected specimen revealed no cancer cells, and all the tumor tissue disappeared and were replaced by dense fibrous tissue. W e concluded this case to be a case of complete remission and no further operative treatement was performed. The patient has been disease-free and well until now (May 5, 1991).
