To investigate intratumoral regional differences in DNA ploidy and antigen expression of human colorectal cancer, multiple samples taken from different sites (oral, surface, bottom and anal) of each tumor of 18 patients were studied by cytofluorometric analysis and immunohistochemical methods. Each sample from the same site was subjected to both studies.
Larger regional differences than 0.4 in DNA index were present in 6 patients. Regional different DNA ploidy (mixed DNA ploidy) was observed in 7 patients. These carcinomas with mixed DNA ploidy tended to be predominant in an advanced disease. Regional differences in immunohistochemical expression degree were also observed. Especia-lly, a percentage of c-myc and NCC-ST-439 was related with the high-ploidy carcinoma.
These results suggests that colorectal cancer might possess a biological mutiplicity and these features could be an indicator of the tumor with malignant behavior.
