Prostaglandins of the colonic mucosa and the inferior mesenteric venous blood in ulcerative colitis.

The values of prostaglandin (PG) E<SUB>1</SUB>, PGE<SUB>2</SUB> and PGF<SUB>2α</SUB> in the colonic mucosa and the inferior mesenteric venous blood during surgery from 12 patients with active ulcerative colitis (UC) were measured by radioimmunoassay. The levels of PGE<SUB>1</SUB> and PGE<SUB>2</SUB> in the colonic mucosa of UC patients were significantly higher than those in controls. The levels of mucosal PGE<SUB>2</SUB> increased according to the severity of the inflammatory change. There were positive correlations in the levels of PGE<SUB>1</SUB> (r=0.72, p<0.05) and PGE<SUB>2</SUB> (r=0.72, p<0.05) between the colonic mucosa and the inferior mesenteric venous blood, respectively. The synthesis of PG was thus shown to be increased in the colonic mucosa in UC, with resulting absorption of PG from the colonic mucosa into the inferior mesenteric venous blood.
