Application of Factor VIII related antigen in distinguishing between blood or lymphatic vessel invasion of colorectal carcinoma.

In order to characterize the invasion of colorectal carcinoma as either blood vessel (v) invasion or lympathic (ly) invasion, Factor VIII Related Antigen (F VIII RAG) was used. Normally, F VIII RAG is present in the endothelial cells of blood vessels, but not in the endothelial cells of lymphatic vessels.<BR>We applied the peroxidase-anti-peroxidase (PAP) method to stain.F VIII RAG in the tissue of colorectal carcinoma. Positive staining of the endothelial cells was observed in the blood vein and artery, and it was most positive in the cappillaries. In contrast there were very slight. or negative stainning of the endothelial cells of lymphatic vessels.<BR>We thus concluded that there was a clear distinction between blood vessel invasion and lymphatic vessel invasion. Also, we recommend the use of the PAP method for F VIII RAG for the determination of whether the invasion of colorectal carcinoma is either blood or lyphatic vessel invasion.
