A brief explanation of the general process and mechanism of sintering in both single and multicomponent powder system has been given on the basis of the present knowledge obtained from the work of numerous investigators including the author. A typical process of particle bonding has been demonstrated by the micrographs showing the evolution of structure during sintering of a spherical atomized copper powder, and further the general laws govering densification during sintering both in solid state and in the presence of a liquid phase have been explained from the some experimental data on the actual sintered materials. For the better understanding of physical concept on the sintering phenomenon, the material transport mechanisms predominating each stages of sintering, such as the formation and growth of neck and the shrinkage and growth of pore, have been also refered briefly in the last section.
