Pretreatment of samples and types of matrices were studied to find the best conditions for secondary ion mass spectral measurements of anionic dyes and their intermediate compounds. In order to obtain the secondary ion mass spectra of good quality, it was indiespensable that the samples were purifided as much as possible and the sulfonic acid groups were changed into free acid.The reversed phase HPLC, in which mobile phase contained ammonium carbonate, was applied to the purification of the anionic dyes. The efflueut was then passed through a column of H type cation-exchange resin, where sulfonic acid groups were changed into free acid, and at the same time excess amount of ammonium carbonate was removed. Anionic dyes thus purified clearly gave the protonated molecular ions and fragment ions reflecting their molecular structures on their SIMS spectra. Glycerol was the best matrix and the higher concentrated glycerol solution close to soturation gave the better mass spectra.
