The role of transurethral resection in the treatment of prostatic cancer IS discussed. As it is well known that hormone therapy cannot successfully treat all prostatic cancer, any possible therapeutic approaches must be utilized in combination. Transurethral resection has been widely accepted as the method to relieve patients with prostatic cancer from the urinary outlet obstruction. It is an easy and safe procedure. Both radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and even hormone therapy, damage normal cells or organs as adverse effects. Immunotherapy cannot destroy many cancer cells. In contrast, transurethral resection can selectively remove many cancer cells as a surgical procedure. So it may be recommended to resect as many cancer cells as possible, then succeeding therapies will become more effective. Another reason to recommend much resection is that because a variety of histological patterns are found within a prostate. Exact histological type can only be revealed after examination was done on various parts of the cancer tissue. The therapy must be decided considering the exact histological pattern.
