Effect of the mechanical type artificial mitral bi-leaflet valves on the ventricular flow field was examined. Effect of two main parameters, the operating wave form and the operating solution, were examined in order to gain more realistic operating conditions simulating physiological condition. Two waveforms, the sinusoidal and the physiological, were adapted for this study. As for the operating solution, two solutions, the saline solution and the glycerol-water mixture solution, were used. Dynamic PIV method was used to obtain time resolved velocity vectors and turbulent share stresses.Based on the experimental results following general conclusions can be made: Higher velocity during accelerating flow phase was observed under physiological wave form; Flow tends to less diversed when solution viscosity was increased.
